About Rising Star
Housing Co-operative
Our Community
Rising Star Co-op, established in 1985, is a 33-unit housing co-op located in East Vancouver’s Grandview-Woodland neighbourhood. We are three blocks from the Skytrain and close to schools, community centres, and other amenities. We are home to a diversity of household types living in our one, two, and three bedroom units.
Rising Star is an open-concept building constructed around a courtyard and children’s play area, providing important spaces for kids to play and members to socialize. The co-op has a common room for committee meetings, social events, and coin-operated washers and dryers. We have garden plots, secure bicycle storage, and an underground parkade available to members. Rising Star is a non-smoking community and pets are permitted subject to the terms of our pet policy.
Rooted in principles of participation and democratic governance, Rising Star is governed by a Board of Directors. Our membership, maintenance, landscape, and social committees also carry out the work of the co-op. Our members are not landlords or tenants. As co-operative owners, we all work together to govern and manage our home to foster a strong community. Rising Star members are expected to serve on a committee, attend the four general meetings held each year, participate in work parties, and sign up for a chore. This typically works out to 4-8 hours of participation per month.
“I love our community gardens, having a common room, and how our doors open into a central courtyard. Access to shared spaces is important to me because it helps us feel more connected and builds a sense of community.”
